The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is dedicated to establishing Tokyo as a leading fashion hub on par with Paris, Milan, New York, and London by supporting and promoting the fashion and apparel industry. To nurture the next generation of designers who will shape the future and succeed on the global stage, we are launching the “Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2027” competition, open to students currently residing or studying in Tokyo.

* The winners of the Special Selection Award will be determined by a public vote on SNS and
other platforms among the works that pass the first-round screening.
○ The award-winning works will be displayed at various commercial facilities in Tokyo.
○ Award winners will receive support for starting a business or launching a brand, as well as assistance in participating in exhibitions in Paris.
○ Applicants will be able to join workshops and other activities to help them succeed as designers on the global stage in the coming years.

He completed his graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1984. He received the Grand Prix at the Japan Graphic Exhibition in 1982 and the ADC Awards Grand Prix in 1983. He exhibited at the Sydney Biennale in 1986 and the Venice Biennale in 1995. In 1999, he was awarded the Mainichi Design Award Grand Prix. In 2015, he received the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in the Art Promotion Division by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In April 2022, he was appointed President of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Vice Head JudgeYumiko HaraFashion director
In 1970, Hara took part in the launch of An An magazine and began working as a stylist in 1972. For about 40 years since 1973, she has covered the Paris prêt-à-porter collections and reported on them for newspapers. Her diverse activities include serving on the selection committee for fashion-related awards as a fashion director, lecturing, and supervising kimono-related events.

JudgeShihoko OkudaBuyer, ReStyle, Women’s & Children’s Products Department, 2nd MD Group, Isetan Mitsukoshi Ltd.
Joined Isetan Mitsukoshi Ltd. in 2017. After gaining experience in sales and as an assistant buyer for ReStyle on the 3rd floor of the main building, she became the buyer for International Creators in 2023. She assumed her current role in April 2026.

JudgeYuriko OdaRepresentative Director, NPO WheeLog / Representative, NPO PADM (Patients Association for Distal Myopathies)
A person with severe disabilities who uses an electric wheelchair, she was diagnosed with distal (GNE) myopathy in 2002 and multiple sclerosis in 2013. In 2017, she launched the user-generated barrier-free map "WheeLog!" She has received numerous domestic and international awards, including being named a Global Innovator at Expo 2020 Dubai and receiving the Japan SDGs Award (Prime Minister's Award). In 2025, she was a speaker at the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). She also serves on various committees, such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Committee for Promoting Pedestrian Mobility Using ICT and the Tokyo Metropolitan Welfare Town Development Council. She seeks to advance Japan as a welfare leader from the perspective of people living with rare diseases and wheelchair users.

JudgeKaori KanamoriRepresentative Director, Drifters International
After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design with a major in arts, Kaori Kanamori launched the fashion brand "Theatre Products" in 2001 and served as an executive until 2017. In 2009, she founded the interdisciplinary talent development organization Drifters International, where she currently serves as the director. Recently, she has been heavily involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives, including the Nippon Foundation's "Super Diversity Art Festival" and the barrier-free online theater "THEATRE for ALL." Her notable productions include "Clothes in Conversation" (coconogacco / Hiroki Kawai) and Yoichi Ochiai's "Diversity Fashion Show: Projecting Diversity into the Future."

JudgeYusuke TakahashiCFCL Inc. / Representative and Creative Director
He was born in Tokyo in 1985. After graduating from Bunka Fashion Graduate University in 2010, he joined Miyake Design Studio Co., Ltd. In 2013, he became a designer for ISSEY MIYAKE MEN. In 2020, he founded CFCL, which stands for "Clothing For Contemporary Life." In 2021, he received the 39th Mainichi Fashion Awards Newcomer Award (2021), the Shiseido Sponsorship Award, and FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO 2022. From VOL.4 (AW2022) onwards, his collection has been announced on the Paris Fashion Week official schedule.

JudgeChizuru MukoSustainability Director at WWDJAPAN
Having graduated from Tokyo Woman's Christian University, she worked in sales at Edwin and as a journalist for Japan Textile Newspaper before joining INFAS Publications in 2000. As a journalist, she primarily covered designer brands both domestically and internationally. She served as the Editor-in-Chief of "WWD Japan" and in April 2021 assumed the executive role of Editor-in-Chief and Sustainability Director at "WWDJAPAN." In addition to her duties as a journalist, she has given lectures at fashion schools and served as an expert committee member for various government ministries, contributing to the shift towards sustainability in the fashion industry. In August 2024, she started working independently. She continues to serve as the Sustainability Director at "WWDJAPAN" while expanding her areas of activity.

JudgeKunihiko MorinagaANREALAGE Designer
Graduated from the School of Social Sciences, Waseda University. He attends Vantan Design Institute while in school. 2003 "ANREALAGE" started. 2005 Tokyo collection debut. Entered Paris Collection in 2014. In 2019, she was selected as an "LVMH PRIZE" finalist and won the 37th Mainichi Fashion Awards. In 2020, she announced a collaboration with FENDI at the Milan Collection. In 2021, she will be in charge of the official uniform for the Japan Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo, and in 2023, she will design the Beyoncé World Tour costume.

Judging point
Entries will be comprehensively evaluated based on each category’s theme, considering design, functionality (including features and forms that accommodate specific disabilities in the Inclusive category), originality, marketability and business viability, addressing important social issues such as sustainability, and future potential.

Inclusive Design category
This category is for designs intended to be worn by people with disabilities.
More specifically, the following types of designs are considered.
- Designs with functionality and form that accommodate specific disabilities.

Yoshinari Nishio
Born in Nara Prefecture in 1982, he is an artist and a professor at the Department of Intermedia Art, Tokyo University of the Arts. He specializes in social sculpture and performance art. He develops domestic and global projects focusing on the relationship between attire and communication. He also runs the fashion brand "NISHINARI YOSHIO." He has an upcoming publication titled "Inner Rupture of Attire" (Sayusha).

- Para Ice Hockey Silver Medalist.
As the representative of the certified NPO D-SHiPS32 and the General Incorporated Association Shogai Kouryaku-ka, he advises corporations and local governments on inclusion, and visits schools across Japan to promote inclusive education. Serving as a board member for the General Incorporated Association Zero Gravity, he is dedicated to creating opportunities and inclusive environments to ensure everyone can enjoy the ocean.

Sakura Kato
- Co-Representative, General Incorporated Association mogmog engine.
Her second daughter, born in 2010, has Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy. She is committed to building a society where "no one faces despair, even when a child is born with a disability." She runs a variety of initiatives: "Snack Toromi," a community that supports children with eating and swallowing disorders and their families to enhance their quality of life; "Shogai Kouryaku-ka," a platform for tackling social barriers related to disabilities; and "NPO On the Road," an adventure tour for children with disabilities. She is the author of When Your Child is Born with a Disability (A-Works).

In Tokyo, even after the contest ends, the alumni community continues to support contest applicants in their designer careers. We conduct various workshops and experiential programs led by top designers to encourage communication among applicants.
What is Alumni?
It is a community exclusively for participants of this contest, where young designers studying in Tokyo can connect and grow by inspiring one another. It serves as a starting point for becoming a designer active on the global stage.
Eligibility
Open to all applicants of the Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo or the Sustainable Fashion Design Award.
Membership Process
Starting in August 2025, we have transitioned our operations to "LINE" to make the community more accessible and interactive for the members.
